I’m Zenani, a relationship strategist for middle and secondary classrooms.
Relationships can be challenging–especially in the classroom where such diverse needs, strengths, abilities, personalities and lived experiences coexist.
Yet K-12 educators are expected to manage it all, so they can teach and students can learn.
As a former high school school teacher, I remember what it was like, chasing classroom management strategies that all too often either worsened the situation or fell flat because they didn’t align with my values and vision for teaching and learning.
Once I began to reflect upon the beliefs, methodologies, and vision that I held close as a teacher, I learned to prioritize the relationships in my classroom. It took time, patience and intention but each year in the classroom, I marveled at my students’ academic and personal development, as well as my own evolving effectiveness as a teacher.
Understanding that managing student behavior was a route, not the destination allowed for increased participation and collaboration. Every year, with my students, I learned a little more about teaching and learning through the clumsy and compassionate lens of relationships.
Working with educators who are new to the profession or who are renewing their approach to teaching and learning is my way of paying forward what I learned— and thanking middle and secondary educators for continuing to serve our children.
Classroom relationship and community-building have never been more challenging or more necessary to the health of educators and students.
School is where many of our young people will learn how to be in relationship, both personally and professionally. Classroom teachers are called to develop and expand their humanity, as well.
I am excited to learn about your school and discuss how I can be of service toward these goals.
